About the time calculator

Working with hours, minutes and seconds by hand is error-prone because time isn’t decimal — 60 minutes make an hour, not 100. This calculator adds and subtracts durations correctly, so you can total timesheets, work out elapsed time, or combine multiple intervals.

It’s useful for payroll, workouts, cooking, project tracking and any task that involves adding up chunks of time.

Time is base-60, not base-10: 60 seconds make a minute and 60 minutes make an hour. That’s why you can’t just add 1.75 and 1.50 to combine 1 h 45 m and 1 h 30 m — the minutes carry at 60, not at 100. Getting this wrong is the most common timesheet error. This calculator carries seconds into minutes and minutes into hours automatically, so totals are always correct.

Payroll systems usually want hours in decimal form rather than hours and minutes. To convert, divide the minutes by 60: 2 h 30 m becomes 2.5 hours, and 45 minutes becomes 0.75 hours. Reversing it, 0.25 hours is 15 minutes. Keeping the two forms straight prevents small, repeated pay discrepancies across a pay period.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours and minutes together?

Add the seconds, minutes and hours separately, then carry over whenever minutes or seconds exceed 60. This calculator handles the carrying automatically so you get the correct total.

How do I calculate elapsed time between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time. The calculator returns the difference in hours, minutes and seconds, even across midnight.

How do I convert minutes to hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. For example, 150 minutes is 150 ÷ 60 = 2.5 hours, or 2 hours 30 minutes.

Can I add multiple time durations?

Yes. You can sum several durations to total a timesheet or a series of intervals, with the result shown in hours, minutes and seconds.
